Quatre cents ans après leur réalisation, les portraits de Frans Hals respirent encore la vie… un soupçon de sourire, une main posée sur une hanche et, de temps en temps, un éclat de rire. Artiste doué, dont le coup de pinceau habile était inégalé, il a bâti sa réputation sur un nouveau style de portrait qui montrait des modèles détendus et vifs. La popularité de ce travail lui a valu le statut de fils célèbre de Haarlem.
