LE LAC DES CYGNES
Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) conceived the idea for Swan Lake while staging a performance using wood-carved swans for his nieces at his Ukrainian estate in Kamenka.
Drawing on ancient Nordic legends, this great "white ballet" in which young girls are transformed into swans by a dreaded curse was composed by Tchaikovsky between 1875 and 1879.
This work, full of sweetness and melancholy, has long remained misunderstood. It was Marius Petipa, ballet master and choreographer born in Marseille before living in Russia, who gave it his own choreographic reading in 1895.
"Swan Lake" then became one of the most popular ballets in history. It is still the most performed in the world. A mythical classic interpreted here with all the rigor and grace of the 35 dancers of this excellent Russian troupe. A timeless must to discover or rediscover.
